2011 January: Bates

January is over? Wow, life gets blurry in the fast lane.

So this month we finalized ZebraStrut LLC, set up a website (not much content yet, and our designer is still too busy, so it's 100% me).
We released 2 Apps: A Band Name Generator (silly app with ads at the bottom), and an iPad app called Procrastination Presentations (a last minute powerpoint for someone good at BS-ing).
We are about to release a Fortune Cookie app (with the ability to specify your own text for 1 of the cookies and what cookie you want to have that message [for pranks, or proposals, or whatever]).

I also did my final interviews with Adobe/Omniture in Orem (who will be building a campus in Lehi soon). I did really well in the interviews, so hopefully I got the job (knock on wood). I should find out today or tomorrow.
If I don't though, I will definitely be searching for jobs, as I am done with MasterControl (I don't think I can last another month without quitting).

Fintan is now crawling perfectly, so we are slowly re-baby-proofing our house.
Orianna is as talkative as ever, and still dancing like crazy.
Tamara has finally mastered the art of having 2 kids, and is re-integrating herself socially and starting to do fun things and hobbies again.
And I hopefully will make enough money with ZebraStrut that I can slow down and stop being such a workaholic, and maybe have something interesting to write in a newsletter that doesn't revolve around side projects :P

Hope everything is going great for each of you,
-the Bates Fam

The website looks good. I hope it is profitable for you. What does Zebra strut mean? In medicine we have a saying that if you hear hoof beats coming down the path it's probably not a zebra. It's a fancy way of saying that most people with stomach pain don't have cancer, there's probably a simpler explanation for it.

Thanks for the warning on buying a house. I was kind of tossing the idea around in my head, but I think we'll hold off until we're more stable. We will probably only be in Beckley for 1-2 years.

I'm sorry to hear that your job isn't going well. Do you know yet if you got the new job?

ZebraStrut literally means nothing.

We were brain storming names, and I am overly critical of everything and didn't like any of them, because they had weird connotations, or weren't powerful, or pigeon-holed us into 1 field of work (and we are taking a scatter-shot approach with a bunch of different inventions.

Then Shaun (my biz partner) said, "Why don't we just choose an animal we like, and a verb."

I wanted one that was easy to spell and remember, and one that didn't have *tons* of google search competition.

It came down to Lemur and Zebra, and we figured Zebra was easier to spell.

Shaun came up with "Strut" and I love that verb. It exudes confidence, and reminded me of the silly game you used to play called "Stylin'" where you'd walk the streets of Rexburg in funny get-up.

I have an unofficial offer from Omniture, and it is just pending the funding from Adobe coming through. They requested 2 positions on that team, so even if it gets cut in half, I got the job.

They also liked me so much they said they would find a place for me on another team if this teams funding was totally cut.

So it is 99% in the bag... but Shaun set up an interview fr me at Novell just in case.

So odds of me leaving my current employer within the next 3 months is pretty much 100%
